Teen Therapy
in Northern Virginia
With Expand Psychology Clinical Team
For over 21 years, we’ve worked with teens and families navigating the complexity of adolescence. Teenagers are navigating many developmental, biological, and social-emotional challenges all at one stage of life. We all have been there, but more than ever your teen does not have to navigate this alone.
Wondering if your teen is going through something normal or outside the ordinary?
Do they say they’re fine, but you can tell something’s off?
Do you notice them feeling distant, struggling with pressure, or mood changes that you can feel, but can’t quite explain. Teens want autonomy, but also still crave and need adult support. It feels hard to know when to step in and offer help.
In fact, your teen may struggle to ask for help directly. When signs of struggle are there, it's okay to offer help.

“Being a teenager is about forming your identity, finding independence, and discovering the person you want to be. This is hard work, in a time where your brain is still developing all the skills needed to regulate the big feelings that come alongside these changes. When these changes feel confusing or distressing, therapy can help find clarity and calm.”
How Teen Therapy With Us Works
Working with teens requires a particularly deep amount of trust and our team has worked to develop expertise in ensuring teens know that what they bring to us remains confidential. A strong therapeutic relationship, allows change to happen and growth to thrive.
We focus on building a genuine connection so your teen feels comfortable opening up. We know too that parents care deeply for their teen, we have established clear methods and expectations to keep parents involved too as active supports for thor kids.
Our work is collaborative, practical, and tailored to your teen’s needs: You’ll always know what we’re working on and why. We stay in communication with you as a parent, because we know families are systems and change happens together.
Our Approach Includes:
-
Creates space for teens to process what they’re thinking and feeling, while being challenged appropriately to develop new insights and apply those insights throughout their lives.
-
Helps teens challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, reduce anxiety and catastrophic thinking, find healing coping skills, and increase resilience as you learn the connection between your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.
-
Improves focus, organization, and follow-through. Practice of skills helps them generalize across environments.
-
Helps reduce cycles of obsessions and compulsions while increasing your ability to tolerate uncertainty. ERP allows you to practice the skills that help your mind find more calm and peace.
-
We know that athletes face unique pressures and a need to work quickly to reduce distress, increase resilience, and maintaining their sense of self within and outside their sport.
-
Helps teens manage intense feelings while reducing avoidance, shutting down or exploding.
-
Support your child to embrace their strengths, discover their growth edges, and find new ways to navigate the world with confidence and without shame.
We also collaborate beyond sessions, connecting with schools, pediatricians, and other providers as needed. We go above and beyond in support of your child and family.
-
This is a normal part of every teenage experience. Teens are learning who they are inside and outside their families. Therapy can help teens stay connected to their loved ones while increasing their self confidence.
-
More than ever, teens are facing environmental and societal pressure to succeed academically, driving them to prioritize a sense of perfection. We help teens reach their goals and find that success while reducing the pressure to achieve perfection.
-
Teens long for connection. Social relationships are sometimes hard to make or maintain. Romantic relationships can be exciting, new, scary – sometimes all three at once. Therapy helps your teen navigate these life milestones and establish life long skills to work through them healthfully.
-
As teens approach the end of high school and young adulthood, the transition to college or early career life can be exhilarating and terrifying. Our team specializes in this stage of life and is able to provide in person care during high school and telehealth care as teens transition to college campuses and beyond. In the midst of a transition, your therapist can be a stable home base.
We understand the pressure teens face. Friends, family life, school, and high-performing environments.
Therapy helps them build confidence, clarity, and a stronger sense of self. Therapy is an investment in their present that lasts a lifetime.
