Child Therapy
in Northern Virginia

With Expand Psychology Clinical Team

For over 21 years, we’ve specialized in providing support to children (ages 2 to 12) and their families navigating all of life’s real and complex challenges.

We have worked over time to grow our team to feature child specialists, each trained in different modalities of evidence based care that allow us to individualize treatment. We never fit a round peg into a square hole. Each child is matched with a therapist based on their treatment needs.

Underlying all our modalities is a focus on the therapeutic relationship – when your child feels safe and supported, they are able to do hard things and make life changing shifts in the way they process their feelings, relate to others, and find joy in their lives.

Have you tried everything? Read every parenting book, watched every Instagram video, and said all the right things, yet still don’t know how to help your child?

Is your child doing fine at home, but struggling at school? Are they doing well at school, but struggling in family life? Does life for your child feel harder than you wish for it to be?

You might notice changes in mood or personality you can’t fully explain. Maybe your child is pulling away, acting out, or struggling in ways that don’t match who they used to be.

When your parental instinct kicks in telling you your child’s in distress, it's possible your child is communicating their need for support. And you don’t have to figure it out alone.

“Every child’s experience is different. That’s why we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach.”

How Child Therapy With Us Works

We start by getting to know both you and your child to build a plan that actually fits your family’s needs.

In your initial consultation, you’ll meet the clinician, ask questions, and decide if it feels like the right fit to work together. From there, we build a clear, collaborative treatment plan with both short-term and long-term goals.

Sessions are collaborative and tied to your goals. As a parent, you’ll always know what we’re working on and why. Even when work is long term, it's evidenced based. We stay in communication with you as a parent, because we know families are systems and change happens together.

Approaches We Offer Include:

  • Helps children express emotions through play when words are not yet developed or hard to express.

  • Strengthens the parent-child relationship and reduced big dysregulated behavior

  • Teaches parents skills to connect and respond more effectively to their children

  • Builds coping skills for anxiety, mood, and behavior through identifying ties between our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

  • Improves focus, organization, and follow-through.

  • Reduces OCD symptoms through building tolerance to discomfort and anxiety

  • Supports children who have experienced a traumatic incident, stress, or familial disruption

  • Support your child to embrace their strengths, discover their growth edges, and find new ways to navigate the world with confidence and without shame.

We also collaborate beyond sessions, connecting with schools, pediatricians, and other providers as needed. We go above and beyond in support of your child and family.
