Abigail Wesson, LCSW, MPA
Licensed Clinical Social Worker
About
Abigail Wesson is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker at Expand Psychology who works with children, teens, and their families. Her relational and strengths-based approach is rooted in connection, curiosity, and compassion, supporting young people as they move through a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges that shape their formative years.
Abigail is passionate about helping children better understand their inner world while building resilience and confidence. She works collaboratively with caregivers to develop thoughtful, responsive strategies tailored to each child’s unique needs, with the goal of fostering meaningful, lasting change both in and outside of the therapy room.
Specialization
Abigail specializes in working with children and teens navigating anxiety, perfectionism, low self-esteem, emotional dysregulation, depression, grief and loss, relational challenges and trauma. She is also a neurodivergent-affirming provider, supporting children with differences in attention, executive functioning, and social connection while partnering with families to address needs across home and school.
She takes a holistic, integrative approach, thoughtfully tailoring therapy to each child while recognizing that challenges often show up across multiple areas of a child’s life. Her approach is grounded in play and expressive arts modalities and integrates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS)-informed work, and mindfulness-based practices within a relational, attachment-focused framework. She also incorporates dyadic and family-based approaches to strengthen relationships and support caregivers.
Abigail has received additional training in Child-Centered Play Therapy, Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT), Trauma-Focused Integrated Play Therapy (TF-IPT), Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Extended Play-Based Developmental Assessment, and clinical approaches for supporting children with autism and ADHD.
Education, Training, and Professional Experience
Abigail earned a Master of Social Work and a Master of Public Administration from Texas Tech University.
Her professional background includes experience in education, child welfare, and child advocacy, supporting children and families across a range of needs in home, school, and community settings. She has worked closely with caregivers, educators, and multidisciplinary providers to support coordinated, developmentally responsive care.
She also has experience supporting survivors of trauma and violence, which informs her thoughtful and sensitive approach to care.
Abigail also serves as the Mayoral Representative on Alexandria’s Children, Youth and Families Collaborative Commission, contributing to efforts that strengthen systems of care for children and families, informed by both her professional work and lived perspective as a foster parent.
