Psychoeducational Testing For Academic Accommodations
In Virginia

With Expand Psychology’s Expert Assessment Team

For 21 years, psychological assessment has been a cornerstone of our practice. When you or your child is struggling academically, we know how important receiving clarity on your struggles and receiving fast support will be. With 30+ hours of labor devoted to each assessment, our testing provides clear answers, tangible recommendations, and actionable next steps.

Is your child struggling to achieve the grades you think they are capable of? Do teachers provide feedback that your child seems to understand their learning but are having trouble applying it? Does your child do well in class but struggle on exams? Did your child’s school performance suddenly shift as the demands of school got harder with age? Are you a college student faced for the first time with independent learning and studying and can’t quite figure out your learning style? Do you feel as though you may have a learning disability or learning profile that is holding you back from success?

Clients come to us when they feel stuck academically. They have certain cognitive and academic strengths, and other areas that even with help from teachers do not seem to “click.” After years of uncertainty, parent-teacher conferences, and different tutoring supports, families approach us to figure out their child’s learning profile so you can reduce the distress related to learning, help your child find their passions, and make their education joyful again.

When you are stuck, hopeless, and dreading going to school or college courses, a psychoeducational assessment can help unlock a roadmap to your learning profile, and help you find a path towards success.

Clients Come To Us To:

  • Understand their unique learning profile

  • Executive functioning struggles in the classroom

  • Test Anxiety

  • Worries about dyslexia, dysgraphia, or dyscalculia

  • Testing to inform a 504 plan or Individualized Education Plan (IEP)

  • Accommodations for SAT, ACT, GRE, MCAT, LSAT, and other professional exams

  • Admissions Testing for Independent Schools

  • IQ Testing for Entrance into MENSA

  • Frustration with stuckness in learning environments and a wish to find supports that best fit their learning profile

“Children spend over 25 percent of their week in school. When school is hard, life is challenging. Find clarity now and plan your roadmap for future success.”

What Psychoeducational Testing With Us Looks Like

We are a group of specialists who focus deeply on assessment work.

Psychoeducational Testing is a comprehensive process where we look at your holistic learning profile to understand your strengths and areas of struggle. We use this data to help you understand why you have been struggling, what you can do in the future to alleviate suffering through targeted support, and what strengths you can rely on to have a brighter academic future. Our testing helps you understand how your cognitive, attentional, executive functioning, and social-emotional systems all intersect to influence your learning.

In addition to 30 hours of clinical work, every case is also reviewed collaboratively by our internal team. We also include outside expert consultation to strengthen diagnostic accuracy.

Gold standard tools we use:

  • Assess cognitive patterns to learning and daily functioning. Understand your capacity for verbal and nonverbal learning, fluid reasoning, problem solving, and processing speed.

  • Measure how you learn in different academic settings, to assess the learning environment, style, and content that best fits your needs.

  • How we learn is greatly impacted by our ability to attend to and remember information. Our tools help assess visual and auditory memory and attention to illuminate how you learn.

  • Looks at real-life organization, planning, and task management

  • Learning is impacted by our emotions. Our assessment explores how other mental health concerns like anxiety or depression may also impact your learning and the support available to alleviate suffering.

“We work to paint a nuanced picture of your psychological and academic functioning, not only to help understand your struggles, but highlight your strengths. We can then provide clear recommendations to help learning feel meaningful again.”
