About

Tim Stewart is a Post-Doctoral Resident at Expand Psychology in Falls Church and Alexandria, Virginia. He works with clients from adolescence through adulthood and is passionate about helping clients navigate life’s challenges with greater self-understanding, self-compassion, and authenticity.

Tim strives to create a warm, collaborative, and emotionally safe therapeutic environment where clients feel empowered to explore difficult experiences, strengthen their relationships with themselves and others, and move toward a more meaningful and fulfilling life. His approach is grounded in relational, existential-humanistic, and feminist perspectives and integrates evidence-based treatments including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), and mindfulness-based interventions.

Specialization

Tim specializes in providing treatment and assessments for adolescents and adults facing anxiety, depression, trauma, complex trauma, and dissociative symptoms. Tim helps clients understand the connection between emotional suffering, physical symptoms, relationships, and life experiences as part of the healing process. He has a particular interest in supporting adolescents and young adults as they navigate identity development, family conflict, relationships, academic stress, and the transition into adulthood. He also enjoys working with clients facing existential concerns related to identity, meaning, purpose, mortality, and major life transitions. His therapeutic style balances insight-oriented exploration with practical skills, helping clients develop greater flexibility, resilience, and connection to what matters most in their lives. 

Tim has also specialized training working with survivors of abuse, neglect, physical and sexual assault, combat trauma, and medical trauma. He also has experience and a passion for supporting individuals coping with chronic pain, grief and loss, substance use concerns, personality-related difficulties, and multiple co-occurring medical and psychological conditions. 

Education, Training, and Professional Experience

Tim completed all requirements for the Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) degree in Clinical Psychology at Antioch University Seattle and is currently awaiting degree conferral. He completed his predoctoral internship at the Hampton Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton, Virginia. Across his training, Tim has worked with children, adolescents, and adults presenting with complex psychological, medical, and interpersonal concerns in multiple settings, including community mental health clinics, pain clinics, hospitals, integrated primary care clinics, inpatient hospitalization programs, residential treatment programs, and psychological assessment settings.
