About
Dr. Katie O’Meara is a licensed clinical psychologist and the founder and director of Expand Psychology, with offices in Falls Church and Alexandria, Virginia. In addition to providing psychotherapy to individuals and couples, she leads the practice’s strategic vision and provides clinical supervision to Expand’s growing team of therapists.
Specialization
Dr. O’Meara specializes in treating obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety and mood disorders, and adjustment to divorce and separation. She has a particular interest in supporting blended families as they navigate the emotional and relational complexities of forming new family systems. Her therapeutic approach is integrative and evidence-based, drawing from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure with Response Prevention (ERP), Internal Family Systems (IFS), Inference-Based CBT, and psychodynamic theory.
Dr. O’Meara is trained in SPACE (Supportive Parenting for Anxious Childhood Emotions), equipping parents to support anxious children and teens, and works with parents of young adults facing “failure to launch” challenges. Dr. O’Meara also provides couples therapy and is currently completing certification in Relational Life Therapy (RLT) through the Relational Life Institute.
She is licensed to practice in Virginia and is authorized to provide telepsychology services across PSYPACT-participating states, making her care accessible to clients across much of the U.S. She is a passionate advocate for mental health education and has presented on topics including menopause and mental health, parenting children with anxiety and depression, and coping with divorce.
Outside of her professional life, Dr. O’Meara is the parent of five young adult children, an experience that deeply informs her work with parents, families, and individuals navigating complex life transitions. She also has a personal and professional interest in political activism and is committed to supporting the empowerment of women and girls.
Education, Training, and Professional Experience
Dr. O’Meara earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the American Schools of Professional Psychology (ASPP) in Arlington and has clinical experience across private practice, community mental health, hospital, and forensic settings. She has also served as adjunct faculty, teaching courses in Child and Adolescent Psychopathology and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at ASPP.
